What is Unicode encoding?  
  Unicode provides a unique number for every character, irrespective of the platform, the program, or the language. Unicode is a brave effort to create a single character set that includes every reasonable writing system on the planet.  
     
  How to configure Unicode?  
  To use Unicode, you need to enable Indic support for your operating system. Here are the simple steps to enable Indic support for WinXP and Win2000 operation systems.  
     
  WinXP  
     
  Install Language files  
  1. Click on the Start button and then click on Control Panel.  
     
 
  • If the control panel is in "Category View", click on Date, Time, Language and Regional Options under Pick a Category section. Click on Regional and Language Options and then click on Language tab.
 
 

 
 
  • If the control panel is in "Classic View", double click on the Regional and Language Options. Click on Language tab.
 
 

 
  2. Under Supplemental Language Support, select the Install files for complex scripts and right to left language [including Thai] check box.  
 

 
  3. Click OK. You may be asked to insert the WinXP installation CD.  
     
  4. You may be asked to restart your system to complete the installation.  
     
  Add Tamil as an input language  
     
  1. Click on the Start button and then click on Control Panel.  
     
 
  • If the control panel is in "Category View", click on Date, Time, Language and Regional Options under Pick a Category section. Now click on Regional and Language Options.
 
 

 
 
  • If the control panel is in "Classic View", double click on the Regional and Language Options.
 
 

 
  2. Click on Language tab and then click on Details… button under Text services and input languages section.  
 

 
  3. Click on the Add... button under Installed services.  
 

 
  4. Select Tamil for input language and US for Keyboard Layout/IME.  
 

 
  5. Click on Language Bar.  
 

 
  6. Click on the check box named Show the Language bar on the desktop.  
     
  7. Click OK to complete the configuration.  
     
  Win2000  
     
  Install Language files  
     
  1. Click on the Start button and then click on the Settings button.  
     
  2. Click on Control Panel.  
     
  3. Double click on Regional options.  
 

 
  4. Under General tab, select the check box named Indic.  
 

 
  5. Click OK. You may be asked to insert the Win2000 installation CD.  
     
  6. You may be asked to restart your system to complete the installation.  
     
  Add Tamil as an input language  
     
  1. Click on the Start button and then click on the Settings button.  
     
  2. Click on Control Panel.  
     
  3. Double click on Regional options.  
     
  4. Click on Input Locales tab.  
     
  5. Click on Add... button under the Installed input locals section.  
     
  6. Select Tamil for Input locale and US for Keyboard layout/IME.  
 

 
  7. Select the check box named Enable indicator on taskbar.  
     
  8. Click OK to complete the configuration.
